A bone graft rebuilds jawbone so it can hold a dental implant, or keeps the bone from shrinking after a tooth is pulled. The price depends mostly on where the bone comes from and how much is needed.
What’s included
The dentist or oral surgeon places graft material (donor, animal, synthetic or your own bone) where bone is missing, often with a membrane over it, then closes the gum. The bone heals for a few months before an implant goes in.

What affects the price
- Graft material: your own bone (autograft) costs the most, because it means a second surgical site. Average ranges by material: xenograft $549 to $1,386, alloplast $576 to $1,375, allograft $652 to $1,575, autograft $2,161 to $5,148.
- Type of graft: a small socket graft costs far less than a sinus lift or ridge expansion.
- The implant itself is billed separately.
With dental insurance
When it is needed for your dental health, many plans treat this as major care and pay part of it after your deductible, up to your annual maximum. Run your own numbers with the dental cost estimator.
Ways to pay less
- Insurance is more likely to pay when the graft is medically necessary, not cosmetic. Ask for a pre-treatment estimate.
- Ask whether a socket graft at the time of extraction could avoid a larger graft later.
- Compare the full implant quote (graft, implant, abutment and crown) from two or three offices.
- Dental schools and community health centers offer reduced-fee care. See how to afford dental work.
